Hard Contact Lens Cleaning Guide
Proper care of your rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses ensures clear vision, comfort, and long lens life.
Hard (rigid gas permeable) contact lenses require a specific cleaning routine to maintain optical clarity and eye health. Follow these steps each time you handle your lenses.
Step-by-Step Instructions

Wash and Dry Your Hands
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling your lenses. Dry with a lint-free towel to avoid introducing lint or bacteria.

Remove One Lens at a Time
Remove one lens and place it in the palm of your hand. Always start with the same eye to avoid mixing up left and right lenses.

Apply RGP Cleaning Solution
Place 2–3 drops of RGP-specific daily cleaner onto the lens. Do not use multipurpose soft lens solutions on hard lenses — use only products recommended for rigid gas permeable lenses.

Rub the Lens
Gently rub the lens between your index finger and palm using a circular motion for about 20–30 seconds on each side. This removes protein deposits, oils, and debris that accumulate during wear.

Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse the lens thoroughly with the rinsing solution recommended by your eye doctor. Avoid tap water, which can harbor microorganisms harmful to your eyes.

Disinfect and Store
Place the lens in a clean lens case and fill with fresh RGP disinfecting/soaking solution. Allow lenses to soak for the time specified on your solution label — typically at least 4 hours or overnight.

Repeat for the Other Lens
Follow the same cleaning steps for your second lens before placing it in its designated case compartment.

Use an Enzyme Cleaner Weekly
Once a week, use an enzymatic cleaner to remove protein buildup that daily cleaning may not fully address. Follow the product instructions carefully.

Clean Your Lens Case
After inserting your lenses, empty the used solution, rub and rinse the case with fresh solution, and allow it to air dry face-down on a clean tissue. Replace your case every 1–3 months.

- Never use tap water to rinse or store your hard lenses.
- Hard lenses are more durable than soft lenses but can chip or crack if dropped — handle over a soft surface.
- Allow an adaptation period when first wearing RGP lenses — gradually increase wear time as directed by your doctor.
- Never switch lens care products without consulting your eye doctor first.
- If a lens feels uncomfortable or your vision is blurry, remove it, inspect for damage or debris, and re-clean before reinserting.
